I just was thinking about this, didnt the starters back then have rebuildable solenoids? if so, this may explain why the system is charging but still no juice to the starter and your getting the solenoid click? try the new battery first, it's always good to have a good one...I just lost a battery in my dually that was only 11 months old.

Next up is a new stero. That 40 year old radio that's in it has definitely seen it's day. Those new "look alike" ones are cool plus you can hook up a CD player to them.
If the starter solenoid were the problem I don't think it would have started right up after jumping it from my truck. When you hook up a set of jumper cables (correctly of course...
) it lights right off. I never did start it yesterday. By the time I got through fiddle faddling around it was time to go pick up some furniture I had bought at a yard sale. Got a real nice hunter's green leather love seat for sixty bucks. Brand new condition. Even got 56 cents out of the cushions....

Gonna get a new battery at least that way I'll know where I'm starting from.

Judging from your symptoms I concur with the guys that condemned the battery. If it's over a few years old, don't gamble, spring for a new one.
In my Vettes I always get the Exide Optima battery. Three years free replacement and maintenance free.
That 365hp engine was my favorite back then. Love the sound of those solids.

Got the battery out this afternoon and will pick up new battery in the morning. Had to take the coolant tank out to get battery out, not too bad.
The guy was telling me about a High Energy Ignition unit that goes in the stock distributor which replaces the points and condensor. Add a different coil, 8mm wires, and you've got 80,000 volts going to the plugs. He claims the difference is unreal. Anybody ever heard of that???

If you begin to change out to aftermarket parts, the value of your car will decline quickly. The less "original" it, the less it will be worth in the end. Whatever you do to make it more drivable, keep the old parts in a box to put back on at resale.
That's what I like about Corvette Central ... you can get original appearing parts with newer technology inside. Chicago Corvette is also a good source for "real" original parts.

I would NEVER throw away the original parts, I know better than that. And I bought it to drive it, not have it become a trailer queen. And you guys are right, I bought it for what it is, a rumbling, shaking life form in the shape of an automibile. Sitting at a stoplight is just priceless. There is absolutely nothing sophisticated about this car and THAT is what I love about it. It is nothing but "up your azz" attitude.
With this high energy ignition it appears stock as it fits inside the original distributor. However by losing the points and condensor it would definitely make it more driveable and one less maintenance item. And you can bet I have less than zero interest in turning it into a "cushy caddy"....
....
I will put a set of those BF Goodrich gTA/ KD tires on it. It came with a brand new set of tires but they are marked M & S, now why would someone put those tires on that car????? Like I'm going driving in the snow....
It will NEVER see rain with me.
Am also going to splurge and put a top shelf paint job on it. It has 40 years on the original and there are places it shows. One of my oldest friends owns Corvettes West here in Sarasota and he will treat me right.
My plate will read: FOR-OTLW
Raining today and probably next two so no rides in the immediate future. I'll just crank it over (providing it starts of course) and listen to it in the garage. Only for a short time of course, don't want to asphyxiate myself....
