Ya know Bill... I have looked at pics of the other 28s out there. No comparison. This hull hasn't seen nearly the hours in the water as some of these and doesn't have the telltale raggamuffin transom with grunge and growth all over all the fittings, K planes and drives, and no cheap spray jobs.
The transom literally shows as new.

WMF 10-08-2008 12:03 PM

I bought the boat from the original owner John, it only had 125-140 hours on the hull, You have the cleanest 28 out thier!!!! I am glad you like it.

No doubt, every other one I can find pics of has Crusty Butt.

I know when I had your apache surveyed John, thier was not mositure in the entire hull, not a drop!!!

Stormrider 10-08-2008 02:14 PM

I know of one that is cleaner, that has never seen water or 1 hour of use and has never been owned. :D
But you're gonna have to shell out a pretty penny for it.

that boat doesnt exist, it is a myth;)

WMF 10-08-2008 03:29 PM

Mel Riggs ownes it, he wont sell it or does not want to sell it, he had it listed on boattrader this summer. I wonder if it ever sold

Chris Sunkin 10-08-2008 03:35 PM

Mel will sell it. But he won't jerk around with anyone on it. And it wouldn't be cheap. I hear he's been working on rigging it.

WMF 10-08-2008 04:03 PM

Mel never put a price on the boat, I tried to buy it before I bought the Apache I just sold!!

Stormrider 10-08-2008 08:52 PM

It's got twin 502s.
MM would put me in with riggs.
I just can't see spending 80-90-100k? on a boat that would immediately be 13yrs old?
But chris is right, riggs ain't gonna deal w/ just anyone on this.

WMF 10-08-2008 09:00 PM

I did not think I was anyone at the time, I was a buyer with money, and that is all that matters!!!

Steve_H 10-08-2008 09:06 PM

I was told his kids wanted to keep it.

Velocity Vector 10-08-2008 09:09 PM

How come the boat has been stored for so long, a collectors item or something.

Stormrider 10-09-2008 01:09 PM

From what i was told he just had it sitting around.
I was also told if i was interested in it, that MM would make the call for me.
I took that as meaning... he may not talk to me if i just called.
I think Mel is a very private person.
And yes Bill, this may not help him sell the boat. But I don't think he cares either.

Chris Sunkin 10-09-2008 01:21 PM

Mel has been at this for many decades. He just doesn't have the time or interest in getting jerked around... again. If he doesn't know you or you don't come referred, you won't get far. No reflection on you but that's just how guys get after being in this business for so many years.

And yes, Mel doesn't talk to people on the phone if he doesn't know them. Mrs. Mel will talk to you but she'll just schedule you and tell you to ship the drives.

WMF 10-09-2008 01:30 PM

I talked to Mel on the phone back last year when I was looking for a 28 Apache, He was very nice to me and we spoke about the boat, I asked price and he said he would get back to me!!!!

I called three time and had the exact same conversation. Very nice older man but didnt really seem to care about selling the boat. I became fed up and bought a Pantera.

This makes me want to buy something from him.

Not the Carolina Leprechan, however.

cosmic12 10-09-2008 06:52 PM

There is a picture floating around here somewhere that was posted last spring. It looked like it had been started in the rigging. I have been looking for it but haven't found it yet. Very cool boat but like said before whos got 80 to 100k for that old of a boat.

Chris Sunkin 10-09-2008 07:00 PM

McManus has one he'll sell you for $250K.

Chris Sunkin 10-09-2008 08:45 PM

Check Yachtworld- it's on there for a quarter mil.

cosmic12 10-09-2008 08:55 PM

I've seen it and to tell ya the truth it didn't do anything for me. I'm just not a 3 man standup bolster kinda guy:rolleyes:

WMF 10-16-2008 09:30 PM

The engines are out and disassembled. Nice to know exactly what was up.
There are more details on the serious offshore site.

Jigsaw89 11-02-2008 01:44 PM

Which site are you referring to? I'm interested in following this boat resto to the end.

So anyway.... the engines came out this week and are completely disassembled. Come to find out.... very unlikely that they were really Cobras.
They were mismatched. One had nice pistons, rods. One had regular GM.
Both cranks are spun. Most likely one went.... and then the other one went on the ride back in. One of them (probably the one that started the chain reaction) lost an oil pump combo screen/pickup and was probably sucking air at time of steep hull angle.

Guessing one lost oil pressure and spun the bearing.

Heads look good. We'll see.

Way too big dominator carbs have to go.
Declined a pair of blower motors today.

Drives are off and u joints, shafts and gimbals are lovely.

JCG 11-14-2008 02:55 PM

Hey, fund,

Any new update on your Apache Brave?? Why did you decline the blower motors?, just curious. Anyway, I've been following this boat since the beginning and kind of wanted to see how you were getting on for power...

Regards,
Julian

Report from the machine shop:

2 bad blocks.
3 bad heads.
1 sort of bad head.

New blocks and new heads it is.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

WMF 11-28-2008 12:14 PM

Sorry to hear that John, have you found replacements? or what are you thinking of doing now!!!

fund razor 11-28-2008 07:20 PM

Either small blocks or turbines, depends on what people on OSO recommend.
