Phil knows how deep this thread is. I'm sure he looks and or some have told him. I have been wrong before , that being said if we / I am wrong about the boat and current condition cone and show us that you can do quality work and make upstate penis boating a contender.
Also if you are putting hardware back on a boat bathroom calking is not the correct adhesive. 5200 is the correct product. If that boat was a true 0% moister ..... Not anymore. |

This kid is a work of art. I think people are so down on the younger generation because of there overall lack of energy to work...that they see this kid who has energy and is doing stuff, as a promising young talent. Time will tell, but I see this kid in his current state as a SALESMAN. A bullchitter SALESMAN. IMHO. |

My first boatride was in a boat my grandfather built by hand. The first boat I ever owned my dad built for me. I spent more hours than I care to remember as a kid and teenager helping my dad build boats. Before I learned to drive I was mixing resin, wetting out glass and experimenting with epoxy. I have learned more in the last year hanging out at Dave's shop workking on my boat and helping him than I ever thought I knew before. This kid needs to shut his mouth, pay his dues and learn how to use the talent he has. He needs to cross bridges, not burn them. |

So I have been reading this thread for a while now..mostly for entertainment..but i feel now its time to throw my hat in the ring! Mostly because I want to be the first post on page 75) Its been my experience through my life that its sometimes better to shut my mouth and open my ears..I too was 19 and knew it all..hell I moved out when I was 17 and have been on my own ever since..because at 17 I knew EVERYTHING and wondered how my 'ol man became so stupid (the same man that taught me how to twist a wrench and started my love for being a gear head) It didnt take long for that perspective to change and wonder how the 'ol man became so wise about life in such a short amount of time! I have been around boats since I was a kid..operating them..working on them..laying glass..etc..but never in a professional scale and I would never disrespect guys on here that do this for a living and are the true artists by slapping some paint on a boat and degreasing an engine and say Im a custom boat builder. (I am however a Merchant Marine Engineer..so if anyone needs their 16 cylinder 2500HP EMD worked on give me a shout) Bahahahahaha I worked my way up to where I am in my career by OJT and listening to old salty dogs..taking my lumps when needed and paying attention..again..mouth closed ears open..I am now much older than 19 and new to performance powerboats. When I got to the point in my life a few years ago that I could afford to buy into the sport I have loved for my whole life I did so..slightly cocky at the time thinking I too could do it all and no idea of the cost to bring a boat back to life PROPERLY I lost a lot of money..and here I am now with another project on my hands and have found so much support and help from OSO members which I appreciate..I do my own mechanical work because..well.. thats what I do..but I still ask questions to the guys who have 'been there..done that..have a T-Shirt" (some apparently mustard stained from a poker run) for two reasons..they have had the experience which is more valuable than reading any manual..and because it will save me time and money! Money being the driving force for me to do my own work as well as knowing the quality and hell..I simply like to F@#$*ng twist wrenches. I will however be attempting to do some paint work as well as small gel repairs myself on my old Gun because although very reasonable I simply dont have the money to pay someone else to do it and I like the pride factor in saying I did it myself..plus being a learning experience..will it be Glassdave quality..definitely not but even though Im not taking my boat to him to do the work he is more than happy to take the time to answer my questions and give me support..thats what boating is all about to me..like minded people enjoying the sport and helping one another..a brotherhood..part of the draw to the sport along with the adrenaline rush! I have no dog in this fight that has been created on this thread..although entertaining these past few weeks for me sitting out here off the coast of Africa..counting down the days Im done turning wrenches on this boat so I can get home to my own project and hopefully squeeze out a few last weekends at the islands..Ill end this long winded post with a final thought and advice from an old salty dog to a young buck full of piss and vinegar..the people I find most dangerous in the industry I am in are the ones who think they know everything and can do it all themselves better and faster than anyone. There is a reason that there are sayings like 'Jack of all trades master of none' 'I know a lot about a little but a little about a lot' 315 I give you credit for your enthusiasm for the sport and drive to start a business in it..there is however a reason there are specialist like XT that only do interior..Glassdave that only does paint and glass..because they have mastered the art
Just a little friendly advice from an old dog thats still learning new tricks daily! Best of luck in your endeavor.. |

Just a little friendly advice from an old dog thats still learning new tricks daily! Best of luck in your endeavor.. we met because of this place, talked a few times and I think I helped save you from a endless money pit situation and you are much happier now, I love to help out and offer advice, you and I gave ideas to each other and we listened, I don't think I ever treated you like I was above you when we first started talking, always willing to learn new things and meet new people, met Glassdave the same way also....he told me to stop putting money in my old Baja and start fresh... he's a good dude too! |
You did at least open my eyes to research the market and realize what I would get back if I ever sold the Formula vs the money I already knew it would take to get it to what I would consider a boat to be proud of..not pristine..just a head turner..it made me realize if Im going to dump my blood sweat tears time and wallet into something then make it something I want to enjoy for years to come and stop thinking about turning a profit..my boat still has faded stripes and old interior due top a few setbacks this season..but I spent almost every weekend on leave on an island drinking beer and talking boats with guys..my **** wont be done overnight..but you bet your ass it will be done right and if that takes years so be it..if it floats and runs..I have a place to drink beer and get laid..Im happy..work in progress..like I told you before until I can afford paint Ill enjoy the patina..with some guidance from Glassdave though I believe I will attempt to re lay the bow stripes myself so wish me luck..you can come help sand and buff FF..Ill buy Bubbas BBQ!!

Ill leave you with this final thought since the director is giving me the red light.. Reminds me of something my daddy told me when I was a young Ricky Bobbyy.. "If you aint first...youre last!" |
ok so i made it to post 680... im not even giong to bother reading the rest of this train wreck.
in regards to the bottom... i only sprayed half the way back the boat because earlier in the season i was planning on rolling hull speed on it, thats why i didnt care about the over spray on the bottom. anyone who was interested i told them THEY HAD THE OPTION TO HAVE IT PAINTED OR ROLLED. never said this is how you get it. yup, the moisture on the bottom of the hull is i blew a PS line so when i yanked the plug it made its way down the hull. DAMN this boat is a PIECEEE OFFFF ****TTTTTTTTTT. in regards to the red stripe... i had an issue with a solvent and some of the paint peeled when spraying the stripe. i re sanded everything down and re sprayed. i was rushing and didnt put my back tape line far enough back.. learned that when blending you shouldnt rush. TOLD anyone who was interested that the blend will be fixed before picking up. but yall just keep saying im a sly business man and have bad ethics? lets just put this out there cause i know a bunch of you are waiting to hop on my dick on this one waiting by your computers... 1. what have i said/done that makes me ethically wrong? 2. what have i done that gives anyone the idea that im out there to screw anyone? 3. why dont you post any photos of the mirror gloss this boat has? only stupid little knicks. the dash when i sprayed it i didnt get enough paint in that spot because a piece of paper flapped down and blocked it. another learning curve about painting a dash as this was my first DASH i painted. i disclosed to every single buyer interested the condition of the boat. every little knick knack that COULD be done. the thing is, that im learning , is that everyone wants 100G boat for 15g or they want a 90g boat but dont even have a truck to pull it with. and im sure your going to hop all on me about "well why dont fix it" and well to be honest, i doubt its going to sell this late in the season. so im just going to wait till im into my new shop and i can fiddle with the boat and do all the little details. ive just been enjoying running the boat. and go for my trailer i really dont care... i told everyone its ratty, but it still tows like a dream. and how did i lie about the hour meter? ive ran the boat every weekend for about half the summer. i ran it for a week out in loto. i dont know about you but i dont run it for 15 mins and shut it down... how is 40 hours bull****? but hey i appreciate you cluddering my thread and trying to ruin any business i could get off of here. and ya, i worked for a glass and paint guy for a long time. their business is down sizing and were turning away jobs because they did this since they were my age and they are trying to get out and retire. i learned everything from them. but they were not going to type of work i wanted to do. paint is paint, prep is prep, taping is taping. but most of you wont know that because youve never laid more paint than a rattle can of phantom black on your tab touch up in your driveway. also, i even marketed this boat as a perfect boat for someone to fiddle with over the winter... IE gauges, hull speed, etc.. where have i hid anything??? ya, to whoever this applies to, i do have alot to learn, each paint job throws something new. this cafe was a HUGE learning experience but it was worth it. if i was a shady business person those photos you have would have never gotten out onto the web... like i said, all the major things are done. its a boat someone can fiddle with and feel like they had some skin in the game with their boat. unlike some people who pay someone to paint, pay someone for interior, and maybe changed their throttles out... heres just some photos to show that i DO INDEED do quality work... but im sure this thread will hit over 200 pages of worthless bull****. and ill be out working on more boats. and no i never said i was "restoring" the carbon boat. i said im buying it and when i get it ill figure out what i want to do with it then... http://i59.tinypic.com/be654z.jpg http://i62.tinypic.com/30jmf15.jpg http://i62.tinypic.com/141zso.jpg sorry i havent been posting much, i was finishing up this rx8 for a VERY happy customer of mine. oh and heres just a few photos that cigmaster and FF and whoever else forgot to post... sure... in bad lighting anything can look ****ty.. thats why my motors look dirty and filthy because the dust in the shop with the flash made it look like that... but hey, what do i know... you just are looking at photos... http://i58.tinypic.com/r89rh5.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/wv77h3.jpg you guys are straight up going off the deepend... if i had anything to hide i wouldnt have even offered to send the survey but i guess people were that concerned they wanted to pick out the survey and didnt even read and said their was no sea trial? like wtf didnt you even read the survey or na? if i had intentions of screwing people, i wouldnt be marketing myself in loto, the 1000 islands, or the big name, high cliental areas. i never said i am a glassdave, or i am boat customs, but i do want to critique my skills and sharpen my tools so one day i can be. but hey, anyone whose going to talk **** was never and is never going to have me touch their boat. and all those people who talk **** havent seen the boat in person, and all those people who talk ****, are just people i dont need in my life nor my business. just wanted to say thanks to IC, tim and kevin and anyone else who has had my back. and for everyone else, just wait till you see what starts to come out of my shop in the future... thats alllllll im saying. and what im saying is everyone starts somewhere, and this is where im starting, you can like it or not... but its going to happen. |

Dude, you would have been off staying quiet.
You came on here stating you were going to set the world on fire with repairing wrecked boats with your "ancient upstate secret" of doing fiberglass body work that you learned on 440 jet skis. You said you would show us how awesome it was. Glassdave straightened that one out (literally). Then this Cigarette refurb/flip thing crashes and burns as evidenced in this thread. Now you are showing off how well you can use Bondo and 3M double sided tape over a rusted fender lip by slapping a flare back over it. Seriously?! |
Sydwayz are you legit that dumb?! See this is why this thread is how it is. People who lack any knowledge of paint or body come in and tell me how I do my work?! This whole ****inh fender we'll is fiberglass!!!? I cut out all the rust and reglassed the whole wheel we'll!!! there isn't even a ****ing seem how can you say 3m double sided tape?!
|
Good to know.
But, no I am not that dumb. You didn't provide any of that info. The pictures don't speak for themselves as it looks like a fender flare. Alas, I circle back: Why are you showing a rusty car fender to prove yourself on a boating forum? My local auto body shop guy has done that work for me in the past (on my show truck even), but he's not going anywhere near my boat. Unsolicited advice: Overall: slow your row Herein: check yourself before you wreck yourself (if not too late already) |

I replied before I even saw this!!! LOLOLO HACK, "I cut out rust and replaced with glass" well at least it seems you used duraglass that will give it a little more time before it rots again, a experienced autobody man would have cut out, and replaced with the metal it's supposed to be... you fukking hack I would not buy a hotwheel from you.... you are the issue with todays kids, you think you know it all... you do not know chit and a HUGE hack... the car pic proves it more...I been painting my own stuff for 20 years and never did hackwork like you.... wow that floors me you try to school us... man this is funny chit. |
Every time 315 hits this thread he sheds a bit more light on just how clueless he really is. :hitfan::blahblah:
Butchering in a glass patch on a rusted fender is NOT a proper repair. That's how hack shops lipstick pigs for unknowing folks. Priceless! |
Lol. I was typing at the same time Tim.

So let me get this straight... you painted it, but this boat still has all kinds of issues that you will fix after somebody buys it before but before they take delivery... But hey...LOOK HOW SHINY IT IS!!!
So far all you have shown us is that you can paint, well except for the parts you screwed up because you were either in too much of a hurry or lacked the skill needed. And before you say Im just another hater of Phills AWESOMELY MAD SKILLZ, Dave offered to teach you, I offered to open my door to you and give you a place to sleep while school was in session. If you are going to rehab a boat and flip it, rehab the damn thing, finish it. Lipstick on a pig doesn't cut it around here. You want respect, EARN IT. Demanding respect before you have earned it will backfire., THere are more rehab/resto threads on here on here with nothing but INSANE JOB, GREAT WORK! replies than I can count.. Not to mention a lot of those jobs were tackled by people that had no clue what the hell they were doing when they started. |

"I put 40 hours on it because I was using it half the summer"
Well if you had spent that time taking care of the details, and finishing it, this thread would be going an entirely different direction. |
the ebay ad says finished - turn key not work in process personally I was hoping it sold in the 50s anyway that would have meant café market is stronger than ever - I would have sold mine.
|
So just to clarify your response . This is your first boat refresh, correct. You also you have a lot to learn and that will come with time, I agree it does come with time. Issue, you can't learn on other peoples boats. That's not how it works. Please repost the pic off the trailer. If I remember correctly you have stands under it with out block support. The stands keep it up rite. The blocks carry the load. Hence my points of , your a newbi, if a "customers " boat falls due to negligence who eats it? I'm sure your not a reg. biz with insurance as stated earlier.

What about the posts that said "trailer is almost done" gauges are on the way" etc.

The problem is YOU .... Not the guys who offered you advice earlier that you shot down and now they are giving you a little Hazing. You Earned it ,
You had a chance to back up your mouth , but you failed. You set some high expectations for your self and A. Got in over your head with the amount of time and work not to mention the money that all your earlier vision was going to realistically require. And B ... This is the big one.. You rushed and took the boat out of the barn to showoff how shiny you made it while running around with it far from complete sans..hatches vents dash overspray removed and showing pics on here And C After running around with it you let the fun of using it get in the way of properly completing it. You can say the Overspray is no big deal which I know it isn't if it is in a place that it can be removed without damaging the area as it looks like a quick fix on the hull but th the overspray on the accessories panel and the cockpit floor looks really Bad So why didn't you take 20 minutes and sand it off the bottom at the very least ? And maybe clean up that bilge That non functioning Bilge blower is a bit dangerous and being something as important as that not being properly addressed would scare me that there may be something else loose that would contribute to the ignition of the unventilated fumes in the bilge. The instruments were in the mail but the package never arrived. At least clean them up and rattle can them the best you can to cover up the overspray . 8 hours of detail would have saved you a lot of grief , It just SHOWS BAD like it is. The Devil is in the Details. As far as the RX8 I see a pic of a broken and rusted passenger rear quarter and a pic of a front fender and a nother pic of a freshly painted drivers side rear quarter with the gas door taped off. SOOO this has nothing to do with boats' Lets see a finished pic of that passenger rear quarter and a out in the daylight pic of the blend on that drivers side quarter? |
