Tiger upgrades

Ever since I got my Tiger I always wanted to do more with it, today Fed ex brought another piece of the puzzle 4.0 liters... cant wait to see what the old straight bottom does now... SCX's and new transom assemblies are coming as well... I'll post pics as things progress as well as engine numbers. Dave at MDG performance is handling all the build and rerig as I have to work to pay for it ;)

Biggus 03-10-2015 10:01 AM

Very nice! I bet that will liven it up a bit!

jbraun2828 03-10-2015 01:25 PM

Whipples and new drives in the same year, you better get to work haha. Congrats, going to be like a new boat

cigboat1 03-10-2015 01:42 PM

offshoredrillin 03-10-2015 03:21 PM

Thanks all, When Dave and I came up with the formula for my engines, we were at near 640 hp and 670 tq on 87 octane... 509's with afr 335's and a 741 cam with dual plug swap, best of 82.9 with that set up. Should put up some impressive numbers on 93. I'm using the xr lowers and having them done by Wilson. it's going to be fun to see where it ends up HP wise and speed wise... I was going to paint from the rub rail up this year but between this and glassdave finishing my 20, I'm going to hold off on paint till next year, that way with all the rigging and such I can dial it in and not have to worry about scratching fresh paint...

Relaxing 03-10-2015 08:15 PM

What motors are in it now, and what kind of speeds did it run. Looking forward to seeing the progress and the finished product. Good luck, and nice ride in the background.

seafordguy 03-10-2015 08:32 PM

Is that a 430. In the background rob?

jawbreakerkid 03-10-2015 08:41 PM

Cool project Rob! Those 4L's should put a little more crack in that throttle!

offshoredrillin 03-10-2015 09:04 PM

Im hoping for right around 1075-1100.... it should respond well at 82 with 650 hp. Going to be exciting to see top speed... 458 carbon edition in the back Eric, its a clients and for sale under 2k miles.
Cant wait to hear it crack chad :)

seafordguy 03-11-2015 06:24 AM

That's some big power - badass!!!

kreed 03-11-2015 06:50 AM

Awesome upgrade! Nothin badder than a flat bottom Tiger with big power! Im signed up for this thread.

So the blowers just came out of the box, what is an optimistic launch date?

being as the long blocks are already done in prep for this when i built them, Dave is going to put in new springs as insurance as well as new oil pumps. All of the Imco parts are just bolt on, I already had them remove the old gimbles and everything has been sold, so its really just a matter of re assembly. I don't see any reason it shouldn't be ready for memorial weekend. I may hold off sending the lowers to Wilson and get another set of lower cases, to A. have spares. B. do a true speed test difference between a non blue printed lower as compared to a blue printed one. It's nice to see where gains and losses actually occur so I can share that with others that may be looking into it. So if anyone has 2 low water pickup cases for sale pm me.

drpete3 03-11-2015 08:29 AM

Memorial day sounds very reasonable. Are you going to change your drive height? What are you thinking for props?

Why not full SCX? with 1000 hp sounds like a spare pair is a good idea.

I have no clue on what size props, i was going to check with Phil and a couple others I'm thinking anywhere from 28-32 B1's. I have been researching the lowers for quite a while, honestly Craig at Wilson said the merc xr lower is the most hydrodynamic of all the lowers out there in that category. Also the straight hulls respond better with the drive deeper. I only lost one lower in all my years of owning it and that one had 472 hours on it. I run it hard but im not launching it every chance i get so i think my record holds, at least enough to warrant a try. I also run the drives spinning in and the attitude of the boat is perfect for me. I think thats why i was able to achieve the speed i did with relatively low HP. I think the setup is right, and the drive will be a little deeper for a couple of reasons, the scx sits back about an inch more than the xrs, plus the Whipple's are shipped at 148 lbs per, so there is an additional 300 lbs minimum added to the back of the boat.
should spruce this up a bit :)

drpete3 03-11-2015 08:52 AM

Ill bet you spin at least a 32

offshoredrillin 03-11-2015 09:06 AM

Im hoping to stay around a 30-32 as in my research I hear that once you go bigger than 32ish you start to lose effectiveness.

BobbyB 03-11-2015 09:07 AM

I cant wait to drive the crap out of it. lol:D

Quinlan 03-11-2015 09:09 AM

What gears .50 or .36?

Do you know what RPM they are going to have you limited at?

offshoredrillin 03-11-2015 09:39 AM

I'm going to set the limiter at 6200, but im sure max that i will push the go stick is 5800-6000. I'm setting it up for reliability and to be able to cruise in the 70s and 80 with occasional bursts. obviously I want to see a top number but that's not my core goal.

fandango 03-11-2015 10:52 AM

Rob, stay away from the 34's. Awful hard to get on plane (even after Brett did all his magic).

did you figure out if you still have those lower cases? if so ill take them.

dcb 03-11-2015 03:38 PM

What a nice guy Dave is - he just rebuilt an XR for me and met me at his place on a Saturday to drop it off. I am assuming the Cig I saw on the lot was yours. He does great work, I am sure you will be happy with the results.

SLOWRIDE-388 03-11-2015 07:55 PM

This looks like a great build and upgrade. Can't wait to see the final product.
I've got a set of labbed 32s if you are interested. Perfect condition. $1100

Ben

Flamingo 42 03-11-2015 08:58 PM

Sweet project, I'm interested how the Imco's work with the XR lowers. Looking at upgrading to the SCX drives and if I can keep the lowers that would simplify things.

harleybagger 03-11-2015 09:38 PM

Hey Rob, we going to be able to get a beer or two when I come up to get mine?:ernaehrung004:

LivinVIP 03-11-2015 09:39 PM

dcb 03-12-2015 06:22 AM

Ok now that I think about it, the Cig I saw at Daves wasnt a Tiger. I cant remember I was there in Nov. or Dec! Great looking boat!
