Honestly I think the Ilmor is a tough engine to beat for this type of racing. They are tough as nails, run strong, and get pretty decent fuel ecconomy. The Indy drive is a great drive too, although I think an Arneson might be a better drive for long distance endurance racing.
OL is IMO years ahead of the competition in their hull design and even more so in their layup schedule/materials. So IMO, the light and efficient OL vee hull beating out the old cat record is no real suprise either. With that said, purpose built racers could no doubt smash this record in the right conditions. A large light weight cat with big diesel power comes to mind... |

Here is what we are trying to do....... HORBA set out as it's goals: 1.) To save the old race boats before they are cut up and thrown away. 2.) To have some venues that the old boats could be seen and the new competitors have a chance to race real open ocean racing like the old days. 3.) We wanted to have courses that would be at least 200 miles for a minimum. 4.) We wanted dates far enough apart, that would allow the owners of the boats racing, not to take a lot of time away from their businesses. 5.) We wanted different geographical locations, like the old days. 6.) We wanted to create an atmosphere that anyone would be welcome. If you come with an 18 foot Donzi or the latest 50 foot behomoth, you were a racer and you are one of us. I have been getting some interesting calls since this race happened a few days ago and here is what I have told them for dates and locations. Northeast....September 3rd week. Don Aronow Memorial Around Long Island race, 271 miles. This is a dead week for sports news. The World Series hasn't begun, football is just getting started, the US Open is over and the papers will be hungry for any new kind of sports news. A sponsor could dominate the NY metro area with their name as sponsor of this race in this time slot. Southeast....November. The weekend before the racing week starts in Key West. Fort Lauderdale to Key West 200 miles. It does not interfere with either the racing or the poker run that all come after this date. West Coast.....April.....Long Beach to San Francisco. 439 miles. The weekend before the Desert Storm Poker Run. At the end of April a lot of people take their boats back home from Florida, some go to the Desert Storm, so why not do a race too. A three race circuit with plenty of time between races to pay attention to your business. HORBA has a location in Florida that any teams that run the NY race in September, can store their boat and go to OFF in October and then bring you r boat to Fort Lauderdale for the November race. HORBA will give you 910 miles of racing for the year and a chance to see plenty of the country...BTW the San Fran race was won in the past by a Formula 233 with a single engine for power. |
There was mention earlier of a race on Lake Michigan as well. Any thought to that?
Loving these ideas strictly as a fan at this point. Thanks! |
I really think if HORBA joined forces with OPA they would really be on to something....
Always get a total kick out of the offshore comparisons, kinda like trying to argue whats best drag baja indy nascar, etc. Like to see how many of the old timers would willing to take the corners that today's racers do! Running 50 in big waves is one thing, taking a turn at 150 (hell 70!) is another!!! Glad to see this race a success. My recommendation (and take it as just that) is to run these along side an OPA, etc and make it a big event! Would be cool to run these guys on saturday then have the other classes run sunday. Race weekends could use more going on for the fans. Sunny Isles for the Bimini run as usual Long Island race for your Don Aronow Memorial Port Huron for your Great Lakes Run Add in a poker run both on land and water and now THAT would be three GREAT adrenaline fueled weekends!!!! |
It's been a great week all around for V-10's.

Look, somewhere this has gotten off track as to our feelings re racers of today. As far back as you can find in my posts, I have always said that a racer is a racer. The only reason the offshore racer of today is on the shore course, is because that is where the promoters and race organizations put him..If there were a race down a flooded street in Hoboken, there would be racers that show up. We are not now and never have criticized other racers.
What we HORBA and NPBA, are trying to do, is to open up the eyes of boat owners that there is a real test of both man and equipment that can be had by redoing some of the old race courses. We proved that with this 271 mile race in honor of Don Aronow. If more people come out and try it, sooner or later a better breed of boat will be made, as some of the stuff today just honestly wouldn't make it. Race on Sunday, sell on Monday. Once that becomes a reality, then you will see the manufacturers jumping back in to prove that they make a product that can really be used in a safe manner out of sight of land. With this past win of Ilmor, in the old days Carl Kiekhaefer would have been back at Fond du Lac running dynos non-stop to make sure that Mercury would be the winner next time. That is the passion we need to see again in the sport. Rich and Scot and some others thanks for your thoughtful supporting comments. |
Any info on the outboard boat? Was it a 38 Fountain center console?

So who who will tackle the Miami to NY run? Time for that record to fall. |

Cool event again.
Crazy how last year a smaller and older Sonic won and this year a brand new high dollar OL, makes it that much more fun that anyone can win if you can last. Here's to hoping that next year there's even more participants. Winning the event and lasting mechanically is a victory in itself. Winning the event, surviving mechanically and beating a very long time standing record is a whole nother level of victory! :drink: Congrats to all big and small, past and present. Jon |
Congrats should also be given to Mr. Mike Fiore for his vision and drive to build these incredible boats. Outerlimits was and still is ahead of there competion IMHO. Congrats to everyone involved.

I have the VCR, yup it's a VCR, if anyone can copy the VCR vid to CD or whatever, I will send the VCR and the pics or vids can be posted. Mike looked a lot younger.. and so did I. lol |

Kudos to Charlie and Billy for pulling this off and getting this much interest!
Congrats to the two Joes and Outerlimits. I love it and if the boating Gods (and my wife) are all in agreement, I plan on running it next year. Growing up on the Jersey Shore watching the Benihanna in the 1970's and going to boat shows each year drooling over the go-fast boats, I always wanted to race offshore. I was the guy wearing a Cigarette jacket in high school instead of a letterman jacket! In college I got the opportunity to run with team Kamikaze (A-33) in US Offshore. That sealed it for me. Long story short, as I grew in years and boat size, I leaned more to poker runs then racing for a few reasons. First, I could set my schedule and not spend 1/2 the year trailering around the country, the maintenance cost of running 110% every weekend is not in my budget, and I don't like the newer courses running rubrail to rubrail. This is just my opinion. That said, The idea of running an endurance race is VERY appealing to me. I have the boat and crew to do it and hopefully next year, I will have the time. Thanks for bringing this back and I hope to get a chance to run it next year! |

So you get a few thousand down there and there's some pomp and parades, this sport is mostly a fringe event that the general populace is unaware of. There's so much wrong with it that it's not a viable marketing event. No disrespect from those who have passion for the sport and pour their hearts and finances into it. |

Key West is a perfect vacation spot and a season ender globally, plus it somewhat still holds the racecourse offshore. |
Weather is a major factor!Unity well you know:eek:Any way nice job!

Personally I don't even take a second look on pleasure boats , used to but not anymore same goes with cars, bikes are the only things I look different, and that prolly changes too sometime. |

The date for next year's Third Annual Don Aronow Memorial Around Long Island Race is September 22, 2012.
Plenty of time to prepare............ Now is the time to start getting ready....make a plan, make a checklist, start today....before you know it... it will be here. There will be a entry and deposit cut off date for this race in 2012. Deposits must be in by that date. Definite date will be published later, probably April or May of next year. Good luck with your decision on hull and power.....now that it has been done non-stop, that sets the new standard for the overall winner to shoot for. |
Same pricing? Early entry discount still applicable with the new deposit policy?

Any word from Joe and Joe on how the ride was? Were they comfortable? They were in there a long time. Any issues, or was it problem free?

Both years the date was later scheduled by OPA......... I wonder if a vibrant NPBA/HORBA event is really complimentary to OPA's business plan? If a bunch of OPA guys get a taste for unrestricted ocean racing....does that bode well for GPS circle racing? Personally I would discourage NPBA from having a joint sanction if the GPS speed rules are included in a 200 plus mile race where you might cross the finish line first only to be penalized because you "broke out". Bottom line the conflict with OPA race dates is not NPBA/Horba's fault....... and I wonder if you could get a "guaranteed" open date from your leadership? It hasn't worked so far...and I don't believe in coincidences. |

We moved the date per the request. As the time got closer, guess what...the other organization changed their pre scheduled date to the same date we had. This year, we set the date very early as we are doing again....so everyone would know the date and perhaps consider it, when they scheduled their own and secondly, to allow any European teams runnng in Cowes, to be able to do Cowes and have time to ship over for this race. Guess what.....the other organization set their race date on the same date we did...... and no Europeans showed up. So once again with all due respect, this is our date....Sept 22, 2012, we have an endurance event that takes a different boat than the shore racing does. Everyone is welcome, but we are over moving our date to try to satisfy anyone else. |
mike d lets team up and run the pantera, i will help out with the costs and i can get 100ll fuel for 6.00 a gallon.:drink:
|
You have set your dates one year in advance. While in a perfect world no other organization would schedule on top of your event, you can't count on that, at least if we're using history as you described it as a guide. You've already done the best thing you can to protect your event by setting the date early. Strong move.
