Default K & N Flame arrestor

ThIs question might sound dumb but....I bought a flame arrrestor for my 502 efi. No instructions. Called K&N they said it's self explanitary. Well it wasn't. Their was a plate between the stock air cleaner and the engine that doesn't fit with the aftermarket unit.I didn't use it. Does anyone know if it was necessary?? Also I really had to play with the air hose to get it to fit. And their is no 'lip' on the new one to fit onto the existing air hose. Do you just clamp it tight?? Do these things really make a difference?? How many RPM should I expect to pick up? Any help would be great!!!

Probably none . If you wait for a nice cool , low humidity day you could pick up 200/300 even 400 rpm. But then again so would the stock one
