Ok. I was thinking it may have come from a high altitude area but detonation can be caused by other things besides lean mixture.

Update, tried firing the boat with ignition switched off and it sounded like it was skipping through 1 cylinder?? I believe that was the sound referenced before?

Yea, like the rotation speeds up slightly.
Northern Tool or similar stores will have a fairly inexpensive boroscope tool so you can view the pistons.
You can also get one to use in conjunction with you phone.
