Owner's Group or Sanctioning Body????

Professor Peconic,
You raised some additional questions with your web domain seminar. I do not claim to be a computer tech expert, nor will I ever be.
I just want the racers to be able to make a decision to race based upon facts and be happy with their decision. Nothing has been posted with the intention of being a personal attack.
For Domain Registration 102, can we cover how people "Name Servers" in the registration process, and how often they end up being the same? Having never done it myself, I just don't know.
$20 tuition check (for 101 and 102) goes to the March of Dimes today.

I don't get this at all. You guys are trying to take out your frustration about OSS on Peconic by implying he opened Wet Pits as a voice for OSS?????
Look at the first post on Wet Pits. It's Nov 27th. OSS wasn't even formed yet. Bertle wasn't in Key West. Super V lite wasn't originally part of OSS.
What is the problem with OSS???? They stopped doing business with a company that no longer appreciated their business. The owner of the business sold out LAST WEEK!!!!!!!! Maybe the new owner can win back some customers and maybe they can't. Time will tell.
Maybe the OSS guys want to MAKE SURE the old owner is really gone and will not pop back up as he's done a few times in the past. Maybe they want to see if APBA can put a schedule together and stick to it.
Bertle supports offshore racing in many ways. Just because he's not bashing OSS, your going to come after him????? Notice, OSS hasn't said one negative word against anyone? Taking the high road is rare in this sport, but that's were they are so deal with it.
So sit back and relax, in a few months we'll see how this all comes together. It took years to fall apart, it's not coming back together in a week.

Name servers do not play a role in domain registration per se. When you register a domain, say abcdefg.com, you register a domain name.
Once you start a website, and you want that website to be reachable via that domain name, then the name server comes in.
A server connects via a number, say 123.456.789.123
When you type www.abcdefg.com, that name has to be translated to a number. This is the job of the name server. A name service is like 411 for the Internet. "Ahm, Phantom1, Lake Murray, South Carolina, please?" "Hold for the listing: 555-555-1212 ...."
There are gadzillions of name servers all around the universe. Typically, every ISP operates a bunch. Most businesses operate their own. If a name server doesn't has a listing, the next server is asked. That's why the Domain Name System (DNS) is also often called "Distributed Naming System."
Most of the times, when you register a domain, they also want to host your website and provide name services (DNS.) Doesn't need to be that way. They all can be separate.
Example:
Domain "wetpits.com" registered through dyndns.org
Software for wetpits.com is installed on a server in a secure location, a server farm in an abandoned Minuteman silo in the Midwest. Name services for said server are provided by fastdnsservers.com. Once wetpits goes live, I enter ns110.fastdnsservers.com as the primary and ns111.fastdnsservers.com as the secondary nameserver. Done.
Should wetpits.com ever move , say from said abandoned Minuteman silo to a larger location that became available in Cheyenne Mountain, then the "authoritative" name server for that location will be pressed into service, and suddenly ns123.whatusedtobenorad.com may show up as the name server.

FYI, a domain name can be registered in seconds. All it takes is a credit card. When I registered wetpits, I wasn't even in the country. I was traveling in Europe.
As a practical exercise, I have registered www.phantomsveryown.com , my $15 investment into Phantom's future on the web.
This website will be hosted in the secure location somewhere in the midwest. Things have been set in motion. No charge. On the house.
DNS entries typically take 72 hours to "propagate."
A whois query will start working after the entries have propagated.
I hereby confirm that I will transfer ownership of the domain "phantomsveryown.com" to Phantom1 or his designated agents - if they want it.
I am available to create a website on phantomsveryown.com, and to host it for free (as long as reasonable bandwidth requirements er not exceeded..)
It should be an interesting exercise.
