I spent all weekend grinding glassfiber, probably a total of 15 hours, only a couple hours away now! Then it needs to be rebuilt, but that's the fun part.

Got alot of pretty enginestuff delivered on monday, the reassambly of the motor should begin in a few days. :evilb:

Yikes 15 of grinding fiberglass is never fun ! I spent a few hours myself grinding some in the past 2 days & I feel for you.
It makes it worse down in a boat grinding because it doesn't really have much place to go but all over you. Thankfully I have been grinding some car parts. ( although I would rater it be my boat.) Now get that motor togather , Hey I need to do that one myself.

The hull is beeing glassed as we speek and should be done pretty soon, a boatbuilder got to do the job so it will be properly done.

Some of the previous owners has apparently rocked this Pantera...

On the second pic it's grinded and ready to be reglassed.

The crank and oil pump is now actually mounted with new bearings and polished bearings surfaces. The bearing clearance is around .003.

Testmounted the new (to me) KE oil pan, and it fit just fine. Altough I will have the get some extra clearance to the notched transom by grinding down the rear end of the pan.

Yesterday I got the new head studs in place, I will get the heads back from the shop on mon or tues, they needed that valve seat job after all.

Looks good.......awsome videos by the way.............

tomcei 05-19-2007 08:20 AM

Way to go Tomas. Can't wait to see it done!!

IRONMAN 05-19-2007 09:52 AM

Tomas, Can I ask a favor of you? I need a measurement from the centerline of the rubrail ( screws) down to the top edge of the Pantera lettering on the decal. And a measurement from the edge of the Pantera back to the transom edge. The boat is looking good, where is your fuel tank located? I thought it would be in the pictured area between the stringers. Thanks

I will agree that the previous owners that have had this boat showed it no mercy whatsoever but I would like to add that you Crazy sweed's sure havn't helped matters ! :D Glad to see it is coming togather for you. My big motor is marinating at the moment. I have it ready to go back togather but I have patiently put it on hold this last month due to the fact that I have been deciding on how I want to power the boat ect..
We are about to leave here in the next hour or so & take the Pantera out for the weeend !! Talk to you later ,Scott

Thanks everyone! It feels really good to get this started!

Yes, I know that this Pantera got some good ol' beating in it's past. Looks like someone has been trying to repair something around the stringer before, anyhow it will be properly done now.

I will try to remember to do that the next time I'm at the boat.

Yup, the fuel tank it located between the stringers but on those pics I have removed it to be able to fix the stringer and the bottom that had some delamination.

The crack started where the stringer it cut down to lower the cockpit floor to about one inch lower than standard. Pantera did this and put the lower fuel tank in to lower the centre of gravity, to get better riding stability.

Here are a before and two after pics, the bottom and both stringers will be strengthened and then the fuel tank will be put back with foam as before or perhaps we will use divinycell or bonocell or similar.

Had to polish the intake and blower to make it match the new intercooler.

A before and after pic and the, to come, "tower of power"...:evilb:

tomas_wallin 05-19-2007 12:06 PM

Also got started with the carbs today and deassambled them and put them in a container with gasoline until tomorrow when I will start cleaning everything and replacing all parts that are exposed to wear.

tomcei 05-19-2007 03:55 PM

you have been a busy man. All these blown engines are killin me:D
Tomas, I'm trying to finish up my engine (N/A) as well.
Are you going to paint the bilge?

How's it going with your engine then?

I'm going to leave it as is, put in the tank and either fill the space between the hull with foam or put in sheets of high density foam material.

Tomas, you make me feel good because mine is less ripped apart than yours right now.:D That is an awesome tower of power, wish that would fit under my hatch.

Hahaha, thanks alot that really makes me feel better... :p Nah, it's really no biggie putting it back together when the repair is done. We're going to strengthen the floor as well but of course still keep the weight down.

I'm With ya on the weight thing, Pulled out over 100lbs of cabin liner and stuff and replacing it with new stuff at about 25 lbs total. Not much but it does add up.

tomas_wallin 05-20-2007 04:17 AM

The rear part of the floor was actually made out of glassed .3-.4" thick plywood, and the rest of, perhaps, divinycell or similar. The plywood will be replaced with some sort of high density foam and the whole floor will be glassed with a layer or two of thin glassfiber sheets.

The welds that fixate the brackets that hold the fuel tank had come loose so that will be redone as well, that has probably something to do with the damage... :( Altough, that's an easy fix - will take care of that when we replace the fuel pickup with a bigger one.

How much overdrive do I really need to get 8-10psi boost with a BDS 8-71/509/wot@5700rpm? Right now the pulleys are 52 (lower) and 60 (upper), that gives me a 13.3% underdrive? We didn't have a boost gauge last season but did measure the boost once and got .4bars = 5.8psi. But that gauge was absolutely not the most trustworthy one...

tomcei 05-20-2007 08:11 AM

great pics!!
It keeps me motavated. I will start a thread soon about my rebuild. I'm going to the shop to finish painting the bilge right now. I'm trying Imron this time.
Good luck and nice work Tomas

Thanks Tomcei! I'm looking forward to take a look at your rebuild!!!

Cleaned and fixed up the carbs with a rebuildkit today, What a ****ty job!!! Took all day (ten hours) to do the two carbs...

But it was worth it!

Dude! Sweet! 05-21-2007 12:03 PM

Looking good Tomas! Good luck! At least you'll know she's right when you're done.

nalle 05-22-2007 03:31 AM

Great thread and great pics Tomas !
I thought I would find your thread in here.

You have no idea how much I learnt buy reading your swedish thread when you overhauled the 454 in your Ivory. Great stuff !
I probably will not end up doing this kind of work myself, but just learning how is great fun !!

Keep up the good work.

tomas_wallin 05-22-2007 03:45 AM

Thanks Nalle, I beleive that thread is still on that forum. That one got completed unlike the last one on that "other Swedish forum", it got moved here instead... :D

Not so much BS here @ OSO.

:D Yup, especially in the Arrow together with the switch panel on that silk black panel of yours.

I will mount my start panel in the middle of the panel where the key and depth seeker used to be.

hermelinen 05-25-2007 02:30 AM

Any progress with the 509??

tomas_wallin 05-25-2007 03:48 AM

Yup, the pistons rings are now file fitted to Total Seals recommendations - do I need to say my fingers hurt... Did it the old classic way.

Will mount the rings and then the pistons tomorrow, then we at least have a rotating assy...

Just sold the old exhaust today! :evilb:
