Used that bad ass filler to glue the floor to the bottom and to the stringers and then glassed it in place around the whole thing with 3 layers of light chopped mat and one layer of combination mat (chopped mat and woven rowing)

Then topcoated the whole thing to seal it from humid and water. Now it's only the Perelli floor that needs to be glued in place.

nice work Tomas.
that's quite a project

Nice job with the tank install ! I hope the foam doesnt compress when you put 800lbs of fuel in the tank and take it wave hopping ! If it does the tanks going to move and the tabs bolted in will break off ! Im sure you took this into consideration .

Yes it stiff as hell! :D That old foam was a bit so and so... Both the rear tank brackets had broke loose and the front one had cracks in the welds. This is at least a better solution than that.

Dude! Sweet! 06-13-2007 09:52 AM

Tomas, nice work! I'm really impressed with the level of committment and the tidy workmanship. You're a lot braver than I am when it comes to boat repairs!

The thing is also that the tank on this Pantera is quite smaller than on most 28's to make it lower, so it's not gonna be as much as 800lbs even filled up to the top. The area of the foam plates underneath the tank is kind of big too, and since it's a pretty stiff material, as Tomas said, it will probably do the job. The idea is to provide support for the tank and the floor with remained flexibility. We have also welded the brackets on the tank all the way around them, instead of just on the sides, but anyway, thanks for pointing this out. I bet this baby is gonna be able to handle some serious waves out in the Baltic Sea this summer! :woohoo: :D :evilb:

Comments from the fat dude, who's been busting his rear off all weekend ;)

z.zuperboat 06-13-2007 01:43 PM

Cracked welds in the tank !! WOW Your lucky it didnt leak and burn ! If the tanks going to be stronger then so is the bottom of the boat . Nice upgrade guys

Elite Marine 06-13-2007 05:02 PM

Very nice job. :drink: :drink:

Maybe Jo and Pepe will rent us the molds and between all of us we can start pumping out huge HP Panteras!!

Some clarification, it was just the welds that held the brackets. Not the tanks structural welds.

The "fat dude" is of course correct. The fuel tank is at 90gallons (580lbs) so that together with the weight of the tank should add up to a total of about 650-700lbs.

I wish I had my camera with me... I do have some pics on my cell but no cable. I'll take some new pics saturday.

By the way - I got some black paint and hardener from Mange today. Perhaps we'll paint the oil cooler, engine mount and some brackets this weekend then.

Mange 06-15-2007 03:43 AM

Looks very good Tomas!!! Good job!

Did you have that topcoat from Zanders? I might need 4-5kg. Can I buy from them?

Thanks Mange! :evilb:

We do have about two kilos of the white gelcoat left, wax as well. When do you need it? Dr Ph is going to the Pantera on sunday or monday...

We mixed some black paint in the topcoat to get it grey to reduce the chance of visible white shiny spots when everything is mounted. We wanted it black but this will due.

Some progress since last time:

Painted the block, heads and pan and has mounted the accessories (water, fuel, electric, belts, blower pulley, etc). We are rebuilding the fuel system to AN-10 from the fuel pickup (the pickup is 5/8" in diameter) through the fuel pump and to the fuel filter, and AN-8 from there to the fuel regulator and to the fuel block.

The fuel lines were AN-8 with a couple of drilled 90deg fittings that we have changed to 45deg tube fittings and are doing our best to avoid 90's.

Thanks Måns!

We will of course be ready for the Cape! :evilb: I WILL get the engine ready next week! I just need those damn push rods...

Some progress since last time:

Had to order the push rods from the states since noone seems to keep one of the lengths we need. They will be sent from Autoshop Racing engines in FL today and we will get them on friday if the customs treat them well...

Other than that things are rolling...

Mounted the carbs and flame arrestors yesterday so the engine is now about an 20cm even higher...

Hopefully it will fit under the hatch, but if it won't - it's fixable.

Just some hoses left now besides the pushrods and jesels. :drink:

tomas_wallin 06-28-2007 03:22 AM

Hey Måns! How are you coming along with your Arrow?

I´m going to try to finnish up the steering system this weekend and connect all the hoses and mount the hatch. It should be ready to go next week:evilb:
I´ll have to cut out the hatch to fit the flame arrestor:eek:

Navigare 06-29-2007 04:23 AM

Nice to see you are moving along with your engine rebuild. And it's looking great as well.

I've been spying enviously through the fence on that mean looking cat every time I've passed the "sawway" :p

Thanks Nav! :D

Yes I'm getting closer and closer every day. Right now I only need to machine the starter to fit with the oil pan and to get a 50 teeth blower pulley. I was going to switch place of the old ones but for some reason the belt is too short to do that... That would probably make way too much boost so this will be the better solution but now I can't even start it up since I have no belt...

Nice to see the progress in this project tomas_w

It seems like you're doin' all the work so i guess dr.ph ( if that's the lazy asian/lapplander guy) is taking care of the fuel-account this summer:rolleyes:

watch your mouth, you ol' trashrocker! :P
Just kidding, there is a whole lotta truth in what you are sayin' unfortunately. This damn new job has been keeping me pretty busy last 6 months or so. Though I managed to do one thing right at least - choosing a partner to get a race boat with ;)

Speaking about these small "onlys" that are left to be done... Some how these small f-ckers have been setting us back pretty badly, both timewise and dinerowise. :( Hopefully well be able to dyno the monster within a week.

Yours truly, the one and only hobby-gynecologist,

Dr. Phil

tomas_wallin 07-09-2007 05:01 AM

Dyno time thursday morning! :evilb:

Will fire it up today.

The new gauges are mounted in the dash (oil temp, boost and EGT) and all wires are prepared to be connected to the senders on the motor. And the bolsters are in!

Getting there!!!:drink:

Luuk 07-09-2007 05:18 AM

Got damn! Get some pictures in here now Tomas!

Just kidding, the damn internet provider has fked up the connection so I have no way of posting those pics. No can do from work...

What happened to Tobbes TG??? :( :( :(

tomas_wallin 07-10-2007 03:59 AM

The new distributor didn't fit either... :( Had to machine the end cap of the intercooler to make it fit, but now everything is ready to rock'n roll!

There will be some long nights to get it done 'til saturday morning, but it WILL be ready by then!

The nut that held the dipstick in place came loose and in 5secs we had 6-7 gallons of oil in the bilge. :( Shut down the engine emidiatly when we saw the oil pressure falling as a sunset in Africa.

As that wasnt enough the engine is stuck and we just hope that we just have to change the bearings and grind/balance the crankshaft. Tobbe will torn down the engine tonight, and we hope that we will have it all together and running in a couple of weeks, that is if our friend Mr Murphy isnt present. So Norrtälje is not an option for us this weekend, directly after this "incident" I called my boss and told him "I may be available for work this weekend" :( So if you know of any 540cu talldeck 10,2, shortblock please let us know. I hope u guys will come up to Öregrund after the Rolslagsloppet! We will be there!
