Also, no rot to speak of in the engine compartment. The 2X2’s were wet but not rotten and here’s the pad the bulge pump screws to. Lowest part of the boat. Not rotten, go figure.

I noted the same in my rebuild. The theory is that wood must be inside a window of moisture for rot to occur. The mold that causes rot can't survive in completely waterlogged wood.

Will you be replacing the grid system under the engines? Appears like it creates a place for water to pool the way it was originally designed.

Thanks, Todd

yes we’ll be installing 2 or 3 small 1” to 2” tall braces running from the outer engine stringers diagonally down to the center engine stringer like the later 38’s had. It will drain much better.

Ok, at this point I have to ask. Wouldn’t be easier to “splash” the boat and build the entire thing the way you want?

Your work and dedication is very impressive. I didn’t see your other resto but I can’t imagine there are many that are more thorough! Keep it up!

It’s not as big a job as it looks. It’s just time consuming as I’m doing this boat as a hobby mostly in my spare time (maybe 10 hours a week?) with help from one other person after hours. I think two competent guys working 40-50 hours a week could knock something this out in a month or two. (Structural work not fairing and refinish)

Any updates?

Took some time off the 38 to get the motors back in the 30 for our trip to staniel Cay. I’ll get back on it soon.

Got back on the 38 today. Was able to clean the inside of the hull, cut some stringers and engine bulkhead and fit my new tank.

Going in the right direction ! The 30 is ready?

hblair 06-30-2019 07:41 PM

I’m done messing with the 30. I broke the left u joint on vacation a few weeks ago and am done working on that boat. I’ll be building the 38 from here on out. Got a little more done today. Gotta cut a few more braces and do some grinding and will be ready to glass the cockpit stringers and engine bulkhead. This boat will have a sealed cockpit floor and no drain holes in the engine compartment bulkhead.
