I take some masking tape and wrap the roller up and then peel the tape off...that pulls all the fuzzy's off the roller....but i usually use a 3/8" nap roller
ive even seen some micro fiber rollers...

If you have the room for the 1/4" then go for it. I had a 1/2" pipe plug on a port i had to use an adapter to use the 1/8" sending unit....but if i had a 1/4" sending unit it would have been the same...

Im guessing the plastic they used to make those is getting brittle as they age and breaking. Have you tried to copy a set out of some 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood? Round off the edges with a router?
