I can't see how a deep cycle battery would have anything to do with it. Even if the deep cycle was not fully charged, components must be designed not to burn up.

I had the same problem with the EMI's but the Merc "rip-off" valve did the trick - never more than 25psi. Where are you dumping the relief valve?

This setup worked pretty well for changing the upside down oil filters without making a mess. I would usually punch a hole in the filter and then wait for it to drain, then surround the filter base...
