SPRING – It took emergency medical personnel riding in on all-terrain vehicles and the U.S. Coast Guard to find and transport a game warden who was seriously injured about 2 p.m. Sunday in a boating accident on Spring Creek.

Two wardens were patrolling the creek, which is surrounded by densely wooded nature preserve, in an airboat when the accident occurred, said Game Warden Dean Fitzpatrick with the Texas Parks and Wildlife.

What caused the accident is still unknown, but it is under investigation, Fitzpatrick said.

Game Warden Alan Biggerstaff suffered head injuries, a broken nose and a broken thumb. Game Warden Ernie Garcia suffered a minor arm injury.

The Coast Guard was called in to airlift Biggerstaff and transport him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he was treated and released early Monday.

Garcia was driven to Conroe Regional Medical Center, and was treated and released Sunday.

Garcia and Biggerstaff were alone for about an hour after the accident, and Garcia was able to stop Biggerstaff’s head wound from bleeding before they were found and transported, according to Fitzpatrick.

“He lost a good amount of blood,” Fitzpatrick said. However,Biggerstaff was conscious while being airlifted and transported.

Officials do not know what caused the accident, Fitzpatrick said, but it is under investigation.

Because the area is densely wooded, it was accessible only by all-terrain vehicles, which are not allowed in the reserve except when used by law enforcement and game wardens.

“We thought we’d have to get him out by ATV,” Fitzpatrick said. “We were about five miles from the nearest road. Then we were able to get in touch with Coast Guard and they sent a helicopter to fly him out.”

Fitzpatrick said emergency medical technicians were taken to the scene of the accident by ATV to treat Biggerstaff and Garcia before the Coast Guard arrived.

“To get them out was a joint effort between us, The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Coast Guard,” Fitzpatrick said.

In other news today. Captain insano was spotted leaving the woods wearing an empty scotch barel for clothing and heading south down the feeder rode for I-45. He has not been spotted since.

I went to High school with fitzpatrick. He was a pretty cool guy.

I saw Biggerstaff the following Tuesday and he looked fine.

BoatBIATCH 07-23-2008 12:43 PM

you know he's supposed to retire here pretty quick, I don't know why he didn't put in for that captains job and stay another 2 years and retire at captain, he wouldn't have even had to be up spring creek in that postition

Good news. So you will have plenty of time this week to put your engines in your Sutphen and get them out of the barn? You don't need to wait for your part to install the engines. I went and looked at it and you will have no problems installing them first.

The good thing about working down here right now is that you don't have to go far to find cheap labor.

On a serious note, there is a lot of work down here, but it won't be though our company. I won't explain why, but if you could bring me some crews and tools, I could put them to work.

That was just the calm before the storm,,, The trip from bimini to port lucaya, had 4's with a very rare 6 that almost launched us into the atmosphere,, I must say,, that fountain is pretty solid in the rough,, we stayed with all the $250k plus boats in the rough,, On the ride back,, you wont believe it,, but the 38 baja pace boat couldnt stay at a fast speed in the rough (maybe because of passenger issues, who knows) So Creedo took the lead pace boat position, and lead two nortechs and a baja home to florida safely. :drink:
