Need new 1/2 ton, which one ?

The Eco-Boost with steep gearing still get's good mileage once broken in, one of the guys I know has a Supercrew with a couple thousand miles on it, and the mileage seems to get better and better once it's breaking it. He gets 21 on the highway now at 70-75 here in FL with the 3.73 rear end (hand calculated). City he's at 14-16 which is still excellent for that weight of the truck and power as he has a lead foot with it as he says now lol.

Some guys say the rear end "loosens up" after a few K and they get a jump in mileage. Makes sense.
One guy said Ford told him the truck had a "break in" map and that after X miles the FI system switches over to a "normal map" . Interesting idea but unproven.
Many guys say their mileage "jumped" after a few K on the same routes. There are many of these stories. There is a wide average of ranges for the rig, but for its capability It's quite impressive.
For sure if you are doing 100% towing a diesel is a better choice. But diesel trucks make lousy part time cars and home depot runners. The GM 6.2 pulls great, but Im not sure you can get it in a half ton and when used as a commuter it will drive you to the poorhouse.
Im going to try to squeak a few more years out of my paid for 1/2 ton and watch closely. Ill bet you'll see the other mfgrs follow Fords on this one.

I'd still go with the 5.0 as it's still a gem of an engine, and loves mods
.You can get the GM 6.2 in certain models but like you said, it's drinks gas like a mofo.

I have a 2010 GMC Supercrew 4x4 with the max towing package (6.2, 3.73 locker,6 sp auto). I live in SE Arkansas and pull a work trailer 300 miles a week 15-16mpg. Power is outstanding and fuel economy is not bad. Also pulls 5-7 k boats 70-75 through the Ozarks with ease. 9-10 mpg. Truck only average driving 16-18 mpg. If you set cruise at 60, you can get 20mpg. It's hard not to use the 403 hp so I usually get 16-18. Absolutely the best truck I have ever owned (17 trucks over the last 38 years).

All the trucks can get better mileage at 60... but how many places can you actually cruise and do that? Every highway I've ever been on, going 60 would be a death wish. Try that in FL where your likely to get rammed off the road by a semi going 80 LOL.

Yea...I run the Turnpike daily between Pompano and Wellington...80 is my number and I'm in the right lane getting passed by 1/2 of the traffic. I get 15~16 with mine..'07 F-150 KR 4 x 4 w/3:73 & towing package. If I drive 60 I get 19 but would get run over for sure.

Im saying this motor makes good power and tows well for a gas, but is isnt doing what is claimed. if you go to fordf150.net you will see no one is reporting those kinda of mpg towing, I have a 1975 GMC 1ton dually 4x4 crew cab with a built 540 bbc and it will get 9mpg towing a single car trailer, So Im just not the significance of the ecoboost

I have been very happy with my '09 Ram Crew Cab.
3.55 posi, 4x4
Pulls my Checkmate 253 Convincor extremely well. Way better than the Tahoe that it replaced. But then again my '97 Ram 5.9 lowered 3" and 4" towed my boat way better than the Tahoe also.
My nephew has a Tundra that is really nice, but I will stick with my Ram.
