At 19, how much retro shlt did any of us consider?

At 18 years old (1998) I repainted my 1978 Trans Am back to its factory Solar Gold with factory correct decals and lettering, and located the original 8 track delco radio for it. I could have painted it some silly color and put some 22'' rims and a big system in it, but I realized I was white some time before pre school. :coolcowboy:

Seriously though, I agree, its not by any means a hideous paint job. I was simply giving my opinion on it. Some guys might think the paint on my boat sucks, and I am cool with that! The fact he is laying any paint on it at 19 years old is impressive. Some guys might have hated the original pink/burgundy paint job, but I actually liked it. Thought it was different, classy, and unique. Mentioned that a while back. The only one's opinion that matters though is gonna be the one writing the 60,000 dollar check for it.

Phil, hows the interior coming along? Are you painting the dash area too?

Very true but I thought his goal is to "flip" this boat. I don't think the way he did it will appeal to that many buyers. Just my opinion.

Picking up the interior early next week. Headed out to Loto to get it. Yup. Dash will be red and molding some foot holds in for the passenger seating in a way if haven't seen before might be cool. Will pull a plug so I can remake if anyone wants them. New Livorsi custom gauges and senders in the mail as we'll and just got my valve covers back and my water pump delete in the mail yesterday too. I don't think I'll make the poker run. Might need another week to button it up after the 13th but I'm tryin like hell

MILD THUNDER 05-28-2014 10:32 AM

Cool! Don't rush it to meet anyone's deadline except your own.

I thought he had a buyer for the boat when he bought it.... I may be wrong.

315duramax 05-28-2014 10:44 AM

I have someone whose very interested in the boat once it is done. No papers signed or cash exchanged. It's totally my boat and my build until I sell it. I'm trying to get it for the poker run the 13th of June. But I don't think it'll happen.

Hmmmm looks like so repairs being done not discussed ....

Look at front strake area....

The whole floor is out of the boat.... Wonder why.... Seems most of us are showing right saying it's more then just a paint and flip project.... Notice the lack of pics?? Lol

315duramax 06-07-2014 09:23 AM

Man dude you really don't give up... I told you I was doing the boat totally. Not just a quick paint and flip. What 30 year old boat doesn't have a crack here or there? And lack of pics because I'm too busy working on it than to argue with people like you or defend myself to someone whose just a hater. And the floor is out because I wanted to check the stringers and tanks. Both checked out fine

Full Force 06-08-2014 11:34 AM

my boats 29 years old and don't have cracks all over it, especially the bottom, and no I don't give up when you said it would be the most bad ass and cheap redo ever, and showing us you can totally redo boat for 10,000.... I seen pic of the interior on FB, I would not be pleased with that work.... sorry... the style...? we will see whats said when you post them one day... not modern at all.... not even close...

315duramax 06-08-2014 12:04 PM

Guy you just need to give it up. Your basically the last person ****ting on me. And of course your going to say it's bad work, It could have been done by xt innovations for all you know, and just cause it's me you say it's crap. And for the last time dude, I'm trying to add a modern flair to a CLASSIC boat. I'm not bastardizibg it with big numbers and 50000 colors and purple and blue interior with 10 speakers in the back seat. And like I said, this is my first boat doing it all by myself, with no guidance people I trust and who are respected in the powerboat world and forums have given input ideas which I've taken. I understand I came on here a bit strong about what I can do, but it's marketing.. I showed up to Loto and met a bunch of guys on the forum and everyone knew me, everyone knew the boat and the build. Now if I just posted a few photos and everyone said "oh looks good" no one would remember they looked the page. This business is all about what you can produce and the time frame your in. If you think my work (which you've never seen) is garbage, then cool, don't buy any of my boats or **** on my thread about "how I was an ass hole on the FB page, if your getting but hurt about a 20 year old building a cig and having some nuts to do it then you should reconsider your meaning of life sir... And have you noticed that once I started posting pics majority of the people backed off? If I produce what I say and I know I can, then no one is going to give a rats ass about me telling some old guys off on a online forum... So if you may, keep going on about how me building a boat is illegal, and me mowing lawns is illegal, and how I was a dick on Facebook... Otherwise, lay off man. If you don't like what I do, just tell your buddies about it when your drinking warm beer and stale pretzels at your local sports bar about how much of an "I know nothing douche bag from upstate NY who totally can't paint or do glass work, or any of that and how my work ethic is the problem with society starting businesses which i pay tax on but some how still illegal? I'll just go work at mcdonalds cause that's a totally legal business and that's what guys my age should do right? Damn dude. Rant over. Give it a rest you've seen none of my work and like OTHERS SAID you only need one person to write the check.

Full Force 06-08-2014 12:08 PM

Lol ok.... I give ya credit for doing it... But don't brag it's the best when it's not... All around ... I can tell in pictures so seeing in person would make it even more fun... Just saying from the beginning you were a young kid trying a restore and hope it's nice would have changed it all from the beginning... Moving on... Post tons of pics to show us perfection then In And out...

315,,,hey im not busting your balls here,,i just dont want to see you get sued for leaving those stringers go unreplaced..those cracks on the strakes are from a seak stringer structure..cafe cigs are known to brake the forward stringers,,i have seen a few in lake michigan ..you might want to look at those stringers a little harder..yes i also do glass work..

Well that was a wild ride!!! -Just read this mess while waiting for my flight home from LOTO. Nice to meet you guys Saturday night, and all you haters, Phil "The most hated man on OSO" haha! is actually a really nice guy. Best of luck with your project.

Kurt

No offense to anyone else out there but what an awesome project. I don't know the dude doing this project but I'll be looking forward to another cafe re-birth. Kurts one of the oldest and most well respected people on this board and if this dudes cool with Kurt, well...I'll have to give him a pass on his reported arrogance (which I absolutely detest in a person) and give a pass and judge when the boat speaks for it's self. If Phil can do this work at the reported age he is I'll be impressed and hope my young sons can do the same some day and if that day ever comes sit back and say I'm proud of you son.

With that said, Phil - if any of that's said is true and you are the person some believe you to be, I'll say (for what it's worth, which may be its value of my post - aka not much ) learn from your mistakes. Best of luck.

Unless I sell it before the shoot out yes it's gunna be there. And thanks this is tank.. Means a lot. Ya I'm not saying I'm the best but I'm loving playing with this. Hopefully it'll come out how I think it will. Hopefully one more week and we can get it out in the son and start assembling. Didn't make the poker run so I'm blowing off the weekend and knocking out the paint this weekend

Sick Stinger 06-14-2014 06:31 AM

Dont take this the wrong way and im not trying to knock you but, taking a bit longer then you thought? So you cant do it in the time you allowed? And how it's not that big of a deal why does it take anyone so long to so a boat. As you can see you still have an empty hull that needs paint finished interior put back in and togeyer I'm assuming the power and drives are still out plus all the wiring you need to do for the new gauges you were doing. And again not blot beat a dead horse but all those stupid nuts bolts washers you forgot to pick up or didn't realize you needed. Plus the parts still needed to be ordered or other guys have that your waiting on. And once finally together getting all the bugs out even before the 1st ride IE bad switches or connections gummed up carbs bad fuel in the tank put the wrong drive on the wrong side. Honestly just stupid sh1t. As I said mine was not a year down and was alrwady apart I had to assemble and I'm still not in.

Rwbrew3 06-14-2014 11:03 AM

Been watching this thread from the start - my 02 -I think we all get a little over confident when we get excited, this always leads to unrealistic goals ! I applaud this guy, he has been holding his own on this build and I'm sure surprised a lot of y'all but PRIDE keeps some from admitting it! Regardless if he was cocky of over confident, the boat is coming together.

I'm sure all the guys who are now legends in this sport all where over excited and cocky a bit in the begging, now they are all being praised for a great boat, who knows, he could be the next great builder, time will tell that but I sure hope if he is I get to witness it !

OP- keep up the great work !

Sunrocket24 06-14-2014 08:23 PM

315 I'm not going to give you anymore sh$1. You can lay down some paint (not my style) but you can paint very well. I also agree with Sick Stinger that you are about to get into the most time consuming and expensive part of the rebuild (the rigging of the boat). I have been working on the rigging on my boat now for many months and I only have a little 24/7 single. Don't burn yourself out on deadlines, I did that a few weeks ago trying to get the boat done by Memorial Day. I finally realized Its just a toy and when it gets done is when it gets done.

Wildman_grafix 06-27-2014 10:09 AM

Any updates?

Full Force 06-27-2014 10:30 AM

4 months.... I thought this was a easy restore and flip? Sorry I know some of you have in and kiss his ass for being hungry to show his work... But the people that said it was gonna be more then 10,000.00 and more then a month or so like he said on FB shows we are right.... Still not done.... That's all I'm saying...

315duramax 06-27-2014 11:09 AM

Yup. The hull sides are done and wet sanded. Decks done and wet sanded. Need to spray the bottom and cockpit then put back together. Took next week off and trying to get it on the water for the 4th. I never said i would do it in a month. I did say that with a whole crew it could have been done in a month but my hands are the only hands on this boat that's why it's longer. And I work 2 jobs. So I do the boat from 6pm - 3am then work 8-5 5 days a week. I'll post a photo later I don't know how to do it on my phone

drivrswntd 06-27-2014 11:45 AM

The boats apart, no motors in, no interior and your shooting for the 4th? Not going to happen give up now. You'll need some fitting here or some other piece there and you better get ready to start overnighting parts left and right. Been there done that with deadlines on my single 28 and there's always something that puts you back and needs to be ordered.

Sick Stinger 06-27-2014 12:30 PM

I won't make the 4th and the motors are in running and alrwady water tested. Stuff comes up. Summit just screwed my order up son my weekend is shot until Tuesday now. Your optimistic and your really the only one working on the boat good luck with getting the motors in. Dropping them down then pushing them back on the trans mounts along with putting the bolts in is almost impossible. I bought every nut bolt screw washer ect brand new marked in a bag exacally what it was for and I still chased parts hardware and stupid crap for 2 months after it was put togeyer. If you get that in the water befor Labor Day that would be good. Your over zealous that week you took out is not a big deal.

drivrswntd 06-27-2014 12:40 PM

Yup thats spot on. Good resource, you'd be surprised how much stuff you can find on amazon with prime shipping. I was ordering things left and right and paying the $4 to overnight so Jamie could get my boat on the water. We were shooting for end of April, and I didnt get a good day on the water till Memorial day and there was still things left to do. End of June and I think now I pretty much have all the bugs worked out and am playing with prop testing. Just swapped out the junk MSD box the other day

Trying to see if this will work. Trying it on my phone. And you guys are probably right. But were gunna see. We pulled the motors in 2 hours so I can't imagine it will take all that long. And no my hands were the only hands doing the work. But I have buddies and boater guys local that help me with moving **** like the hatch and motors and stuff. It's supposed to be ungodly hot so we'll see what happens. Only the dash left to paint. Ending up not redoing the gauges just for times sake. I'll let the new owner design the dash and I'll do it how he wants or let him run it. Hopefully the photos work.

Don't half azz chit, if you are going to do it, do it all. If you want to make a name for yourself you need to do a complete product. Your trying to do something you can stand on and show what you can do. You need to be in 110%, you have a potential buyer, that's it, there is no time limit. Now is the time to go the extra mile not cut corners.

I used to make high end custom ATV suspension. THe first custom swingarm I made, i took a bath on. Told the guy upfront it was the first on I made 100% from scratch and if there were any issues I would back it %200. I drove 400 miles to install it and dial it in for the guy also sold it to him at a considerable discount, 10 years later that swingarm was resold used for 3x what I charged the guy to build it and for more than other aftermarket swingarms were selling for. All based on my name and reputation, because I took the time to make my name synonymous with quality and my reputation unquestionable.

Do it right the first time, knowck it out of the park by going above and beyond. That will get you your second job, and if your lucky you may break even on that one and you skill set will improve.By the time your on your 5th or 6th you will have developed the tips and tricks to make it faster and easier and you will start making a few bucks. Phuck up or cut corners anywhere on those first few it will bite you in the azz and haunt you.

Wildman_grafix 06-29-2014 03:01 PM

What he said is good advice. When I first started my air brush work I pretty much gave a few jobs away here and there.

After a while I could pick what I wanted to do.
