what is that lower ring for? is that a potential obstruction in it self? would it not be better shaped like a cone or spherical like a half moon!

Here is a comparison on the fundamental difference from a piston engine vs a gas turbine.

After reading most of this great thread.I have a Question. If one was to purchase a turbine boat! Just how practical are they for steady summer weekend use in a brackish water environment.By brackish I mean a mixture of salt and fresh water that we have in the mid Chesapeake bay.By use I mean 150 miles a weekend with stops. But 1-2 hour stops.Boat would be lift kept.Reason that I am asking is looks like the big cats with Gas engines need a lot of maintenance for the little that they are run.We put 70 to 150 hours on a boat in the summer here in Maryland had a couple 200 hr years.Seems like the turbine could go a few years for any major maintenance.Seasonal maintenance is a given. Are they dependable enough to do a 1000 mile trip with stops.I know with #6 drives would be a hourly maintenance on the drives. But with surface drives should be a good set up.Really would like to know the pro's and con's.Thanks to whomever may answer this post.Just a old guy with a dream JOHN SR
