Sounds like valve stem seals. Mine were at the top of the stem before I redid my heads. These were stock 088 heads. A compression test wouldn't be a bad idea as well.

You'll pay more for a VR1 like for like and yes... would take the VR1 vs 280. As a side note you mentioned a penalty if buying a 290SC. VR1 will run 2-3mph faster than the 280 or 290SC like for like...

I had a similar issue but with MEFI3. Was dumping fuel above 3K and breaking up. Turned out it was the map sensor wiring at the connector (map side).

Wow... love the looks of that and congrats! Like others have said, get some seat time then decide on the upgrade. I'd love to get my 290 into the 90's like my previous boat but conditions down here...
