I know even the good guys need their balls busted every now and then.

Steve, Dave.... I have had the argument with guys about Epoxy vs. poly vs. Vynle Ester Resins. I have always opted for Vynles as they seem to be more compatible with top coating (paints and primers) and are much stronger then poly. When doing a repair like a stringer or transom is Epoxy overkill or.... Of course I am talking about a boat that is made with poly.

Audiofn good question and Yes we tend to be "Oversold" on resins, the Vinylesters have twice the physicals as polyesters and in the room temperature cure realm are satisfactory for any repair on a boat built with an ester system.

Couple things with the polyesters and Vinylesters there is some chemical interaction with them and the existing substrate, Now with epoxies it is strictly mechanical.

I said room temperature world:

Let's look at that say, polyesters give us: @25,000

the Vinlyesters: @50,000

Room temperature epoxy: @ 50,000

250 degree cured epoxy: @125,000

The numbers I used are for "example" not reality and remember some plastics store heat as bonds.

We had a powder coating factory with large ovens, my small molds (ester) were baked at 100C for 12 hours in an effort to get the cure in the high 90% range.

For the race stuff and high end oneoffs post cured epoxy is my choice. BUT not forgetting the first Cheetahcat was done with a Dow 470-36 vinylester system.

That is cool looking stuff. I will look into it some more.

Does one resin perform better under preasure/bagging then another? I am just a novice and do not have any bagging stuff so I just put my stringers in and try and roll it out as dry as I dare. With the way I do it is one much better for that then the other?
