Hey Kilr,
Thanks man, I will keep that in mind when i decide to have it done.
The boat used to run a bit over 100mph, best I saw was 102mph with 800hp. Just had a rebuild done on the motor after dropping a valve last year at 59 hours. Changed to hydraulic cam and lifters, a bit milder setup. It will run a solid 90 full of fuel and people, and mid to high 90s running on empty. I was hoping to break 100 again, but right now I am happy that I have a motor that will last for a couple hundred hours.

Didn't dyno it. The engine builder was thinking that we would make more power than we did before, because it had a massive cam in it, too big really, but I dont think we are making more power.
I am still in the break in period somewhat, and still have a couple more degrees of timing to put in it, plus the carb could use a bit of tweaking, but I am pretty happy with it.

I'm suprise thr engine was so bent out of shape. Was the reason it blew because the springs were set all at 18? I know John had that motor set up extremly aggresivley. Either way, it's great your using an egnine builder close to your area. There's no price one can put on having your mechanic 10 minutes from your boating area and have you back up and running same day!!

No, having them set at 18 was actually better for the life of the motor. The reason it blew was because 175# springs were used even though everything called for 225# springs with that amount of lift, solid lifters, duration, and ramp rates. It was a ticking time bomb until a valve floated and kissed a piston.
Dont even get me started about all the other stuff that was done wrong, some of it can be attributed to different engine building theories, but other things cannot. For example, the bolts for the Jesel belt drive were a tad too long, which was solved by doubling the gaskets under it, which then caused it to hit the back of the crossover, which was solved by putting three gaskets under that. Instead of just trimming the bolts, it was done half assed. Ring gaps set at 35-40 thousandths, and leaking down at 10-13% with 59 hours on it. The explanation given for the 6" breather extensions and STILL blowing a quart of oil out into the bilge every two hours? Crank windage.... For comparison, we are now running the exact same lower setup, pistons, crank, ect., but 22-23thousandths rig gaps, no breather extensions, and ZERO oil on the valve covers. Even though we upped the compression to just shy of 10:1. What happened to that windage you ask???? Same question I had.
See you got me started, and I am not even done.
Let's just say that I am very glad I didnt spend that kind of money getting it built only to have it last 59 hours, only to find out that it was from all signs a piss poor build job. To their credit, the bottom end clearances were spot on. With the setup in it now, We are pretty confident we will get a few hundred hours before refreshing the top end. A lot better than them telling me I should bring it up at 75 hours to do the top end. 75 HOURS!! A 1500 Sterling goes longer than that.

I dont want anyone to draw from this that I am bashing the builder, because I am not. He builds some great stuff, but with this particular build I think they dropped the ball. Everyone pretty much knows who built the motor originally, and I am not going to name who they are or start a thread bashing them, because I dont really think that is necessary or mature. I didnt have the motor built, and if I had, it would not have been built like it was. A milder cam setup that is conducive to longer life could easily have been used and would have made just as much power, which is the route I would have gone.
Besides, who is really going to care about a small timer like me bashing someone? If I was a Gino or Pyburn status type guy, well then my opinion might have an impact.
