Traci Seeds of Cincinnati could be one of the coolest women on the planet. At the very least, she’s as understanding and downright tolerant as they come.
How do I—having never met her—know this? She let her husband, Gary, bail last weekend with his friends Carl Marotzke, Phil Sousa, Bill Blaxton and Corey Duke for a four-day trip to Miami and the Florida Keys.
For those of you who may have missed it and now find yourselves in deep yogurt, last Sunday was Mother’s Day, not the best day to leave a mom of three grown children home alone.
But boys trips to the Florida Keys are tradition for Gary Seeds—that’s how he’s celebrated his past two new sportboats from Cigarette Racing Team. And as it happened, X-Factor2, his new 42X V-bottom powered by dual calibration Mercury Racing 1350/1100 was ready for pickup last Friday. So Seeds and company headed south last weekend to take delivery of the 42-footer and run it to the Hawk’s Cay Resort on Duck Key.
“Traci is very understanding, that’s the truth,” said Seeds. “But I did send her flowers on Mother’s Day.”
Longtime Cigarette Racing Team employee Bud Lorow and Erik Christiansen, the Opa-Locka company’s new president, delivered the boat to Grove Harbour Marina in Coconut Grove. Seeds and company met them there and—after a short sea trial—took off for Hawk’s Cay. For the rest of the weekend dubbed the “Maiden Voyage Tour” (Seeds even had T-shirts made) they launched day trips from the resort to relatively nearby destinations.
“We stayed at Hawk’s Cay the whole time and romped around between there and Holiday Isle,” said Seeds. “It feels like the most solid Cigarette I’ve ever had. Bud was a god-send throughout the building process. Stephen Miles design the paintjob and Dave Hunter applied, and it’s just stunning.
“The boat ran great all weekend,” he added. “There are a few little ‘punch list’ things yet to be done but nothing significant at all. In all, we put about 300 miles on it.
“We ate and drank well,” he added, then laughed. “That pretty much sums up the trip.”
Seeds dropped off the 42-footer at the Cigarette facility yesterday before catching a flight home from Fort Lauderdale. He said he plans to campaign X-Factor2 in several events this season including two on Lake Cumberland, the Thunder Run next month and the Lake Cumberland Poker Run in September.
So Gary Seeds has a new Cigarette and his Cincinnati home has a new back deck. Quid pro quo to Traci Seeds for the boys weekend, perhaps? I don’t know and Seeds wouldn’t say.
But I do know this: Traci Seeds is one of the coolest women on the planet.
